Woodpecker likes Quince!

This Green Woodpecker, a juvenile I think, spent several minutes clinging to our small quince tree.

It probably would have stayed much longer if my photographic efforts hadn’t disturbed it.

Woodpeckers the tree fellers

In the post for July 2012 we showed the series of holes drilled by a great spotted woodpecker.  The recent gale found the weakness and this is the result.

The tawny owl is back – roosting in its favourite spot.

Danger – woodpecker at work

It seems that a great spotted woodpecker is trying to fell the top half of a large nearly dead bird cherry (prunus avium).  It chose not to nest so I’m not sure why it drilled the holes in this formation.
